신솔아(Sol Shin)는 사진, 영상, 텍스트를 기반으로 작업하는 다학제 예술가입니다. 사회가 요구하는 규범 속에서 개인이 자신을 어떻게 인식하고 표현하는지, 그 과정에서 발생하는 소외와 저항의 순간에 관심이 많습니다.

  기존의 사진 역사에 존재하는 카메라와 피사체간의 권력 관계에 주목하며, 카메라가 이러한 위계를 강화하는 도구가 되거나 피사체를 피상적으로 대상화하지 않기 위한 방법에 대해 탐구합니다.
   
   카메라 가진 권력을 분배하기 위해 사진과 인터뷰, 대화를 결합한 협업 방식(collaboration)으로 작업하며, 피사체를 단순히 촬영 대상이 아닌 사진 작업을 함께 만들어가는 능동적인 주체, 즉 작업의 ‘참여자’로 바라봅니다. 참여자와 협업하며 서로의 관점과 경험을 교환하고, 그들의 목소리와 서사를 되찾을 수 있는 가능성을 실험합니다.

  Sol Shin is a multidisciplinary artist working across photography, video, and text. Her practice explores how individuals perceive and express themselves within the norms imposed by society, with a particular interest in moments of alienation and resistance that emerge in the process.

  She examines the power dynamics between the camera and its subjects embedded in the history of photography, exploring how to prevent the camera from reinforcing these hierarchies or reducing subjects to superficial objects of representation. To redistribute the power held by the photographer, she incorporates collaboration into her practice, combining photography with interviews and conversations. She regards her subjects as active participants who contribute to the making of the photographic work. Through collaboration, she exchanges perspectives and experiences with participants and experiments with ways to reclaim their voices and narratives within the work.

   Her major projects include What Was Your Name, Again? (2026-), which explores the representation and identity of the Asian diaspora in Berlin; The Room on Fire (2023-), which addresses social pressure and isolation experienced by the younger generation in South Korea; and Breaking the Silence (2024), which documents solidarity within the Itaewon community following the Itaewon disaster of October 29, 2022.
