What Was Your Name, Again?

2026-Ongoing

A documentary photography project exploring the politics of naming through collaborations with diaspora communities in Berlin.

What Was Your Name, Again? is a documentary photography project developed through collaboration with members of the Asian diaspora in Berlin. It explores how race and gender shape identity, and how social expectations leave lasting traces on both the body and the mind. Participants share everyday experiences of microaggressions, gendered stereotypes.

In many Asian cultures, a name is more than a label. It often carries family history and cultural heritage, with each character carefully chosen to reflect the hopes and wishes parents hold for their child. However, names can become vulnerable as they move across languages and cultures. This project begins with a near-universal experience shared by Asians living abroad: having their names mispronounced, anglicised, or replaced with something easier. From there, it expands into a broader exploration of how names bear, distort, or erase cultural memory and shape diasporic identity.

Rather than presenting these stories as narratives of victimhood, the project focuses on acts of agency and self-definition. Through interviews, conversations, and collaborative image-making, participants become active co-authors rather than subjects of observation. Photography is reimagined not as a technology of classification, but as a space where individuals reclaim the authority to represent themselves and construct new narratives about identity and belonging.
