In particular, the female nude has long been consumed as an object of male desire and possession. As a female artist, I have felt the need to create images that embody the female gaze and express female desire. I believe that as images created from a female perspective become more prevalent, we can begin to dismantle the binary stereotypes of male–strong–active and female–weak–passive. &nbsp; &nbsp; This photo series explores the shifts in desire and power that occur when the relationship between the “one who looks” (the artist) and the “one who is looked at” (the model) is subverted. The title, The Rules of Being a Model, presupposes the existence of an unseen observer—the “one who looks”—positioned behind the frame. As viewers engage with the images, they are inevitably prompted to ask: What are the ideal conditions of a model? &nbsp; &nbsp; By following the gaze of the observer, I hope the audience will ask themselves, What does it mean to take a photo—or to look at someone? &nbsp; &nbsp; In this work, I created nude images that reflect female desire, departing from the conventional lens of the male gaze. Foreigners, the LGBTQ+ community, religious figures, schools, clubs, bars, and offices—all these disparate lives and spaces collide in a raucous symphony of existence. Yet Itaewon was once a graveyard. Perhaps that is why this place draws those who yearn to live. Here, the rejected, the castaways, the excluded—those pushed further and further until they have nowhere left to go—seek solace. They find recognition and welcome in each other. At the heart of this gathering lies the Halloween festival. &nbsp; &nbsp;Since October 29, 2022, I have wept without apparent reason, often tormented by guilt. When I close my eyes, I see hundreds of flailing hands, the wail of red ambulances, and soiled white cloth. That night, hesitating in Itaewon Station, I chose the path home instead of taking exit 1. I survived. &nbsp; &nbsp;The dead do not vanish. They speak through the mouths of the living, even in death. I longed to record that voice. I took photographs and listened to stories as I faced mortality. As I gathered the victims’ stories, I began to see hope rather than despair. They possessed the strength to dream of tomorrow. &nbsp; &nbsp;We are stronger than sorrow. We have the power to rise above our grief. In that moment of realization, the reasons for our silence in the face of death dissipated. I wished for us to speak more loudly, sometimes clumsily, of life and death. To unearth the death we had buried beneath the relentless grind of daily life. To weep without restraint. https://solshin.com/On-the-Way-to-Grandma On the Way to Grandma 2019-2023&nbsp; &nbsp;This project documents the journey of returning to my grandmother's house, a place that offered me solace during my childhood. After 20 years since my last visit, the house was much different from the way I remembered it. Dust had settled on the floorboards, and my grandmother was much weaker than before. &nbsp; &nbsp;Visiting her home allowed me to confront the memories of my childhood and, in doing so, I found the Seoul, Korea &nbsp; &nbsp; One day, I met someone at a party who introduced himself as a mudang—a spiritual healer or medium who practices traditional Korean shamanism. When I cautiously asked, “Can you see my future?”, he said that he could. I asked him various questions about my uncertain future. While looking at my face, he said that what we are going through is just a long process, and that we will eventually arrive somewhere. He added that I shouldn’t worry too much. &nbsp; &nbsp; All youth are orphans. We are thrown into the world with no place to believe in. Where to go and what to do is entirely up to us. We often feel anxious about a future no one can solve. But at the same time, we easily forget that countless possibilities lie ahead of us. &nbsp;One summer, there was a massive flood. After the flood, I met someone who believes that art should be recognized as labor, even within a capitalist society. Despite that belief, she is so poor she can’t afford to pay her rent. With her frail arms, she dances, acts, and paints. We took a walk to the Han River Citizens’ Park near her house. She was the one who brought it up first. “There used to be a lot of trees here. Was it last summer? It rained so much, the whole place flooded. All but two trees died.” “I remember that too. It used to be a dense forest, but now it’s devastated.” “All the trees along the road grew slightly bent. Maybe that’s why... or maybe their roots just weren’t deep enough? They were all swept away.” “We’re standing on the graves of trees.” &nbsp; There was no one else around, but I could hear water rushing somewhere. The wind was strong. “I want to move like a tree swaying in the wind,” she said, and began to dance. Her thin arms swayed slowly beside the half-bent bough.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The tree hugged the tree.
