It explores how race and gender shape identity, and how social expectations leave lasting traces on both the body and the mind. Participants share everyday experiences of microaggressions, gendered stereotypes. &nbsp; &nbsp;In many Asian cultures, a name is more than a label. It often carries family history and cultural heritage, with each character carefully chosen to reflect the hopes and wishes parents hold for their child. However, names can become vulnerable as they move across languages and cultures. This project begins with a near-universal experience shared by Asians living abroad: having their names mispronounced, anglicised, or replaced with something easier. From there, it expands into a broader exploration of how names bear, distort, or erase cultural memory and shape diasporic identity. &nbsp; &nbsp;Rather than presenting these stories as narratives of victimhood, the project focuses on acts of agency and self-definition. Through interviews, conversations, and collaborative image-making, participants become active co-authors rather than subjects of observation. Through portraits of rooms and bodies, it captures their silent struggles, resistance, and desire to escape, giving visibility to the unseen. &nbsp; &nbsp; This project visualizes the social oppression and silence endured by South Korea’s younger generation, particularly Gen Z, through photography. Today, Gen Z is often portrayed by older generations as rude, selfish, and and overly dependent on technology. However, I wanted to look beyond that superficial narrative. &nbsp; &nbsp;I see contemporary Korean society as deeply collectivist, where subtle yet pervasive social pressures encourage conformity to a singular ideal of success. Those who struggle to keep pace or deviate from expected paths are often labeled as inadequate and pushed to the margins. A growing number of young people have become what is known as "은둔 청년(Eundun Cheongnyeon)", socially withdrawn youth. Similar to the Japanese phenomenon of “Hikikomori”, these individuals isolate themselves from society for extended periods, remaining confined to their rooms and avoiding school, work, and social interactions. &nbsp; &nbsp;Their withdrawal is not simply a matter of laziness or unwillingness to participate. Rather, it is often a response to systemic pressures: relentless academic competition, an unforgiving job market, and the constant fear of social judgment. This project asks a difficult question: Who locked these doors? The answer is complex. No single person or institution is responsible. Rather, it emerges from the interaction of individual struggles, family expectations, peer pressures, and broader social structures. &nbsp;&nbsp; I met those who felt suffocated by unspoken pressures and the invisible coercion so characteristic of Korean life. Some were preparing to leave the country in search of a different future. Others had retreated entirely into their rooms, unable to endure the pressure any longer. I wanted to witness what often remains unseen and to listen to those living in silence. &nbsp; &nbsp;Each space became a landscape, and each body a map of resistance, survival, or retreat. Some spaces contained dreams of escape; others revealed the quiet resilience required simply to endure. Foreign residents, LGBTQ+ communities, religious groups, students, workers, and nightlife cultures coexist within the same neighbourhood. For many, Itaewon has represented a space of visibility, freedom, and belonging that is often difficult to find elsewhere in Korean society. &nbsp; In the tragedy, countless images and videos circulated across social media, exposing the public to scenes of shock and death. While these images became central to the collective memory of the disaster, they also reduced Itaewon to a site of trauma.&nbsp;This project seeks to look beyond those images. Through portraits and interviews with residents, workers, activists, and community members, it explores the everyday lives, memories, and relationships that continue to shape Itaewon. Rather than focusing solely on the tragedy, the work examines how communities endure, care for one another, and reclaim a sense of belonging in its aftermath. &nbsp; By foregrounding the voices of those most closely connected to the neighbourhood, the project aims to challenge simplified narratives and offer a more nuanced understanding of Itaewon as a living community rather than merely a site 2019-2023&nbsp; &nbsp;This project documents the journey of returning to my grandmother's house, a place that offered me solace during my childhood. After 20 years since my last visit, the house was much different from the way I remembered it. Dust had settled on the floorboards, and my grandmother was much weaker than before. &nbsp; &nbsp;Visiting her home allowed me to confront the memories of my childhood and, in doing so, I found the 2023,&nbsp;“11 exclamation points, and question marks”, KT&amp;G Sangsangmadang Gallery, Seoul, Korea &nbsp; &nbsp; One day, I met someone at a party who introduced himself as a mudang—a spiritual healer or medium who practices traditional Korean shamanism. When I cautiously asked, “Can you see my future?”, he said that he could. I asked him various questions about my uncertain future. While looking at my face, he said that what we are going through is just a long process, and that we will eventually arrive somewhere. He added that I shouldn’t worry too much. &nbsp; &nbsp; All youth are orphans. We are thrown into the world with no place to believe in. Where to go and what to do is entirely up to us. We often feel anxious about a future no one can solve. But at the same time, we easily forget that countless possibilities lie ahead of us. &nbsp;One summer, there was a massive flood. After the flood, I met someone who believes that art should be recognized as labor, even within a capitalist society. Despite that belief, she is so poor she can’t afford to pay her rent. With her frail arms, she dances, acts, and paints. We took a walk to the Han River Citizens’ Park near her house. She was the one who brought it up first. “There used to be a lot of trees here. Was it last summer? It rained so much, the whole place flooded. All but two trees died.” “I remember that too. It used to be a dense forest, but now it’s devastated.” “All the trees along the road grew slightly bent. Maybe that’s why... or maybe their roots just weren’t deep enough? They were all swept away.” “We’re standing on the graves of trees.” &nbsp; There was no one else around, but I could hear water rushing somewhere. The wind was strong. “I want to move like a tree swaying in the wind,” she said, and began to dance. Her thin arms swayed slowly beside the half-bent bough.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;The tree hugged the tree.
